CSM 14 Candidate Cheat Sheet (Finished)

Update (16 June 2019)

Voting is now closed.  Winners will be announced at Eve North on June 22nd.

Introduction

The purpose of this post is to help voters make informed voting decisions without having to read walls of text on campaign threads or listen to 30 minute interviews.  My goals are to be informative, concise, and trusted.  I have provided subjective opinions that you may disagree with, but I have tried not to misrepresent any candidates.  I got started really late this year (this is my first), and only got to do about 24 man hours worth of research.  The only reason this was even close to enough time is because I performed a bare minimum of research on the null bloc candidates..  I hope to do much better in the future.  My goals are (1) to budget more time, (2) send out candidate questionnaires, (3) and communicate with various player groups in order to report on their endorsements, sentiments, and support.  Additional notes at bottom.

Best Hope Candidates

These are my endorsed candidates that stand the best chance of overcoming the voting power of the null blocs.  If you want to see more diversity on the CSM, please place these guys at the top of your ballots.  You can find more information about them down below.

  • Exookiz (Leading WH Candidate)
  • Mike Azariah (Community | Served on CSM 8, 9, & 10)
  • Steve Ronuken (3rd Party Dev | Current CSM)
  • Olmeca Gold (Whaler / Anti-bloc | Ran an Outstanding Campaign)

Other Picks

These guys don’t have the best chance of winning, but I support them anyway.   Perhaps exposure will help build their brands and increase their chances of election for CSM XV.

  • Doris Andedarie (WH | Community)
  • Insidious Sainthood (Solo & Small Gang PvP)
  • Jurius Doctor (Subject Matter Expert | Community)
  • Mathew Dust (LS | Community)
  • Stitch Kaneland (Solo and Small Gang PvP)

  • Discord
  • Platform
  • TIS Interview
  • Notes: He has a good attitude and good values, and wants to be a community candidate for Wormholers and the Chinese.  Unfortunately, I have mixed feelings about his ideas.  I think some of them are really good, but that others would have unintended consequences.  Of course, that doesn’t mean his particular ideas would ever be implemented, but I do want CSM members who can see and advise CCP on the potential ramifications of changes.  In short, he’d probably make for a great community candidate, but he falls a little short as a subject matter expert.

Cornak Firefist

  • Endorsed: No – Bloc Candidate
  • Candidate Type: Subject Matter Expert | Community
  • Area of Space: Nullsec
  • Affiliation: Test Alliance Please Ignore – Dreddit
  • Area of Expertise: Generalist
  • Values/Priorities: Not Neglecting Other Areas of Space | Alliance Tournament | Botting
  • Personal URL
  • TIS Interview

Crystalline Entity

  • Endorsed: No – See Notes
  • Candidate Type: Subject Matter Expert
  • Area of Space: Lowsec | Nullsec
  • Affiliation: Darwinism – Black Dragon PHP
  • Area of Expertise: Piracy
  • Values/Priorities: Lowsec
  • Candidate Thread
  • Notes: Some of his ideas are poorly thought out.  No experience with FW.  There’s a much better Lowsec candidate running.  Does oppose making Eve safer though.

Darien Avan

  • Endorsed: No – Bloc Candidate
  • Area of Space: Nullsec
  • Affiliation: The Bastion – Redshift Concepts
  • Values/Priorities: Overall Health of the Game | All Communities & Types of Gameplay
  • Candidate Platform
  • TIS Interview
  • Notes: Didn’t finish researching

Doris Andedarie

  • Endorsed: Yes – See Notes
  • Candidate Type: Community
  • Area of Space: WH
  • Affiliation: Chain Smoking – Sinners Trajectory
  • Area of Expertise: Industry | Ratting | Minning | FC’ing | PvP
  • Values/Priorities: Community Interaction | Botting | Non-Enlish Speaker Accessibility | Nullsec/WH Gameplay (unclear what is exactly meant by that)
  • Campaign Thread
  • Notes: I think Doris Andedarie has a great attitude and some great values -and she wants to be a community candidate.  I wish she had been more active on the forums, but Brisc wasn’t active on the forums until he got elected.  Thus, that’s not a deal breaker for me.  Her biggest downside seems to be a lack of support.  Those who do know her seem to think very highly of her, but she just isn’t known by a lot of people.  Now, she does have at least some support from the Russian community, but I have no clue how universal that support is.  Thus, I’m going to recommend her based upon principle, and not based upon whether or not I think she has a snowball’s chance in hell.  Hopefully, she builds up her community presence and brand over the next year and runs for CSM XV.

Dunk Dinkle

  • Endorsed:  Bloc Voters – Yes | Non Bloc Voters – Probably Shouldn’t (see notes)
  • Candidate Type: Community
  • Area of Space: Nullsec
  • Affiliation: Brave Collective – Brave Newbies Inc
  • Area of Expertise: Industry | Logistics | PvP
  • Values/Priorities: Represent Everyone | Quality of Life Stuff
  • Personal URL
  • TIS Interview
  • Notes: Seems like a really good guy and would probably be a good community candidate (and I’ve heard nothing but good things about him).  In fact, people have gotten on my case about not recommending him, but here’s the deal.  I want to recommend him because I think he would be a great CSM.  However, because of the way our voting system works, voting for him increases the voting power of the null blocs who have him on their ballots.  In other words, the more votes he gets, the greater the percentage of everyone’s vote that gets passed down to other candidates.  And since he’s a bloc candidate who is on bloc ballots, that results in more votes for other bloc candidates.  I really hope he wins, but I do not want to strengthen the vote of null.  So, if you are a bloc voter, please vote for him.  In fact, put him at the top.  However, as I non-bloc voter, I’m going to vote for non-bloc candidates and hope that Dunk Dinkle makes it on the CSM without my vote.  He’s probably #1 on Brave’s ballot, and is at least on Horde’s ballot (#4), so I’m thinking he already stands a good chance.  Hopefully, he doesn’t come up short by a couple of votes.

ExookiZ

  • Endorsed: Yes – See Notes
  • Candidate Type: Subject Matter Expert
  • Area of Space: WH
  • Affiliation: Scary Wormhole People – The Dark Space Initiative
  • Area of Expertise: Wormholes | Small & Medium Gang PvP
  • Values/Priorities: Structure Mechanics that Encourage Conflict | Ship Balance | Server Performance | Content that Promotes Activity and Conflict
  • Candidacy Thread
  • TIS Interview
  • Notes: Has served on several focus groups, 10 years old, and sounds like he knows his stuff.  With Mortarian Decala failing to make it on the ballot, he stands alone as the leading WH candidate.  Moreover, he is more well known outside of the WH community than the other candidates, which might help him actually win a seat.

Fiedan

  • Endorsed: No – See Notes
  • Candidate Type: Subject Matter Expert
  • Area of Space: WH
  • Affiliation: Einstein-Rosen Brigade – Interstellar Expeditionary Group
  • Area of Expertise: WH
  • Values/Priorities: Alliance Bookmarks | Social Features (i.e. making public fleets easier) | Motivations  for Conflict (i.e. Resource Scarcity)
  • Candidacy Thread
  • Notes: First comment on his thread is denouncement from a corp mate using an alt.  But, he does have his defenders.  Moreover, I can get behind what ideas he does share.  Ultimately, however, I would like more information and it looks like he’s short on support.  Maybe next year.

Gobbins

  • Endorsed: No – Bloc Candidate
  • Area of Space: Nullsec
  • Affiliation: Pandemic Horde – Pandemic Horde Hld.
  • Notes: Didn’t Campaign

Innominate

  • Endorsed: No – Bloc Candidate
  • Area of Space: Nullsec
  • Affiliation: Goonswarm – Karmafleet
  • Values/Priorities: The Health of the Game
  • Candidate Statement
  • Notes: No Campaign Thread, No Url, No Interview.  Just the initial statement.

Insidious Sainthood

  • Endorsed: Yes – See Notes.
  • Candidate Type: Subject Matter Expert
  • Area of Space: HS | LS
  • Affiliation: Red versus Blue | Blue Republic
  • Area of Expertise: Solo and Small Gang PvP
  • Values/Priorities: FW | Lowsec | New Player Attraction | Player Retention | Small and Medium Sized PvP | Game Balance
  • URL
  • TIS Interview
  • Notes: Belongs to a PvP focused highsec group, but spends a lot of time in lowsec and is extremely concerned about it.  Want’s to increase transparency and restore people’s faith in the institution.   Seems sensible and intelligent.

Jurius Doctor

  • Endorsed: Yes – See Notes
  • Candidate Type: Subject Matter Expert | Community
  • Area of Space: Nullsec
  • Affiliation: Iron Armad | Iron Guard
  • Area of Expertise: Generalist
  • Values/Priorities: New Player Attraction | Retention | Community
  • Youtube Channel
  • TIS Interview
  • Notes: Definitely knowledgeable. Used to teach for Eve Uni and currenlty makes newbro friendly educational videos. Is from Nullsec, but doesn’t have bloc support. I believe that his stated values/priorities are a much greater indicator of what kind of CSM he would be than what area of space that he lives in.

Killah Bee

  • Endorsed: No – Bloc Candidate
  • Area of Space: Nullsec
  • Affiliation: Northern Coalition – Shiva
  • Notes: Didn’t Campaign

Liz Lizardbreath

  • Endorsed: Ambivalent – See Notes
  • Candidate Type: Community
  • Area of Space: HS
  • Affiliation: No Alliance – The Seer Covenant
  • Area of Expertise: Missions | Industry | Exploration
  • Values/Priorities: Good of the Game | Representation for All
  • Canmpaign Thread
  • TIS Interview
  • Notes: Pure community candidate and I like her values and intentions. Unfortunately, I don’t think she has a lot of support. Moreover, she hasn’t been active on the forums or Reddit.  Of course, it doesn’t look like Brisc Rubal started posting until he decided to run, and he turned out to be an outstanding community candidate. I doubt she’ll get elected this year, but maybe if she puts herself out there more, she can build up her brand and have a better shot at CSM XV.

Lorelei Lerendi

  • Endorsed: No – See Notes.
  • Area of Space: HS
  • Affiliation: No Alliance – Lorelei for CSM
  • Values/Priorities: Highsec | PvE | Nerf Ganking | More Transparency when Banned | NPE
  • Campaign Thread
  • Campaign Video
  • Notes: I lean towards the carebear side of the spectrum, and have been highly active in HS over my career.  Yet, the last time I was ganked, I was about 2 weeks old (holds true for all my characters).  Gankers tend to evaluate the chances of success before committing ships to concordoken.  Thus, a selection bias is probably leading her to believe that the activity needs balancing.  The truth of  the matter is that she needs to examine her risk management strategies and why she’s being selected as a target. After all, ganks occur because a lack of knowledge, impatience, and/or laziness, and not because ganking is too easy to execute.  In other words, she failed to accurately assess the problem, and instead instead chose to advocate against someone else’s playstyle.  Yes, certain activities and playstyles can be unbalanced or have no good counterplay options.  This is not one of them.  A lot of candidates have proposed “bad” ideas, but she only proposed two, and this one does not speak well for her ability assess problems or concerns, and seems to indicate that she does not understand or value the player ecosystem.

Lucrative Business Opportunity

  • Endorsed: No – See Notes
  • Candidate Type: ?Community?
  • Area of Space: Nullsec
  • Affiliation: No Alliance – Goats Unlimited
  • Values/Priorities: Good of the Game | Representation for All
  • Campaign Thread
  • Notes: He’s not from a null bloc, but he didn’t give an interview and his candidate statement and campaign thread didn’t say much about his values, priorities, and area of expertise. Doesn’t seem to like how the null blocs currently control the CSM.

Manic Velocity

  • Endorsed: Ambivalent – See Notes.
  • Candidate Type: Community
  • Area of Space: Nullsec
  • Affiliation: NPC Corp
  • Area of Expertise:
  • Values/Priorities: Good of the Game
  • Personal URL
  • TIS Interview
  • Notes: As a twitch streamer, he’s rather well known and liked.  As a candidate, he has said that this is a semi-serious run and that he doesn’t really have a platform.  Basically, he’s concerned about the direction of the game, and thinks that he can help by running for CSM -which is understandable.  However, if he wants me to take his candidacy seriously, he needs to do so as well.  He has served on a live event special interest group for the Matrix Online, is a community candidate, and is popular enough that he might be able to overcome the voting power of the null blocs.  On the other hand, I think there are better community candidates out there (i.e. Jurius Doctor, Mathew Dust, Mike Azariah), and this shouldn’t be a popularity contest.  Traded endorsements with Xenuria.

Matterall

  • Endorsed: No – See my video
  • Area of Space: Nullsec
  • Affiliation: Northern Coalition – Destructive Influence
  • Area of Expertise: Trade
  • Values/Priorities: New Player Recruitment, Player Retention, New Features, and More
  • TIS Interview
  • Notes: I really like Matterall the content creator, and Matterall the person.  But I am staunchly opposed to Matterall the CSM.  First and foremost, I am concerned that his campaign strategy could lead to greater influence for the null blocs and conflicts of interests for those beholden to the king makers.  Moreover, as TAGN points out, he doesn’t seem to have a problem with pay to win.  Of course, I’m positive that there will be vociferous opposition on the CSM no matter who gets elected, but I this further erodes my confidence in him.  CCP is looking for ways to further monetize Eve.  They introduced skill injectors, they asked the CSM for plex sink ideas, and now they are thinking about adding popup ads into Eve.  Now, I am not fundamentally opposed to any of these ideas*, but the way they are implemented is extremely important to me.  Miscalculations can, at best, annoy players, and at worst, cause them to feel that PvP in a PvP centric game is unfair and for them to lose confidence in CCP and game direction.

Matthew Dust

  • Endorsed: Yes – See Notes
  • Candidate Type: Community
  • Area of Space: Lowsec | Nullsec
  • Affiliation: Federation Uprising | MATARSOC
  • Area of Expertise: FW
  • Values/Priorities: Lowsec | FW | Small Gang
  • Faction Warfare Discord
  • Campaign Thread
  • Jin’taan Interview
  • Notes: Community Candidate, represents lowsec, already runs the FW Discord, sounds like he has a good head on his shoulders.

Mekelchen

  • Endorsed: No – Null Bloc
  • Area of Space: Nullsec
  • Affiliation: Goonswarm Federation – Karmafleet
  • Notes: Did not Campaign

Mike Azariah

  • Endorsed: Yes- See Notes
  • Candidate Type: Community
  • Area of Space: Highsec
  • Affiliation: NPC Corp
  • Area of Expertise: Generalist (PvE Only)
  • Values/Priorities: Highsec | PvE | New Player Retention
  • Jin’taan Interview
  • Old CSM Minutes Links
  • Campaign Thread
  • Notes: Served on CSM 8, 9, and 10. Stands a good chance of being elected. Haven’t had the opportunity to go through the old CSM minutes yet, but I like him so far. Supported by WTM.

Mr Deathwhisper

  • Endorsed: No – Null bloc
  • Area of Space: Nullsec
  • Affiliation: Northern Coalition – Burning Napalm
  • Values/Priorities: Fixing Issues vs. Adding New Content | Balance | Interface/User Experience
  • Candidate Statement
  • Notes: No Interview, No Campaign Thread, No URL.

Nahtor Raschura

  • Endorsed: No – See Notes
  • Candidate Type: ?Subject Matter Expert?
  • Area of Space: Nullsec | Wormholes
  • Affiliation: Hard Knocks Associates – The Chaos Army
  • Area of Expertise: Recruitment & Personnel
  • Values/Priorities: Recruitment & Member Management System | Bookmarks | Travel Route Can Factor in Jump Gates | Sell Escalations through the Agency | Improved Email Functionality
  • Campaign Thread
  • Notes: Okay, I really like his quality of life ideas, but after additional research, I found some gameplay/balancing ideas of his, and… they were not good.  Moreover, he just doesn’t seem to have the support.  As for now, I hope he starts posting in the little things thread.  By the way, post and vote for your favorite suggestions in the little things thread.  Obviously, how much dev time required would be a factor, but the more votes something gets, the more likely CCP is going to take it seriously.

Olmeca Gold

  • Endorsed: Yes – See his campaign video
  • Candidate Type: Subject Matter Expert
  • Area of Space: Nullsec
  • Affiliation: Delve Pest Control Inc. – The Free Folk
  • Area of Expertise: Whaling
  • Values/Priorities: Making Eve more Dangerous (Especially for the Mega-Empires), Emergent Gameplay, Good Fights, Game Skill
  • TIS Interview
  • Campaign Video
  • Notes: He’s basically the anti-bloc candidate.  But if his campaign video can’t convince you, I doubt I can.  BTW, it’s great Eve content in it’s own right.  You should definitely watch it.

Sort Dragon

  • Endorsed: No – Bloc Candidate
  • Area of Space: Nullsec
  • Affiliation: Darkness – Resilience
  • Notes: Didn’t Campaign

Steve Ronuken

  • Endorsed: Yes – See Notes
  • Candidate Type: Subject Matter Expert
  • Area of Space: Highsec
  • Affiliation: Vote Steve Ronuken for CSM – Fuzzwork Enterprises
  • Area of Expertise: 3rd Party Dev | Industry | HS | PvE | CSM (4 Terms)
  • Values/Priorities:
  • TIS Interview
  • Campaign Thread
  • Notes: Steve is from highsec, but he’s more of a rep for 3rd party development and a generalist.  He might not have the insight of a strategic bloc FC into capital balance or whatnot, but he does seem to be a voice of reason on a variety of broader topics.  Plus, he’s probably going to get re-elected, which makes him our best hope of having someone not from nullsec make it to the CSM this year.

Stitch Kaneland

  • Endorsed: Yes – See Notes
  • Candidate Type: Subject Matter Expert
  • Area of Space: Nullsec | Wormholes
  • Affiliation: The Tuskers Co. – The Tuskers
  • Area of Expertise: Generalist
  • Values/Priorities: Balance | Low-Sec & FW | WH | Solo and Small Gang PvP
  • TIS Interview
  • Campaign Thread
  • Notes: Seems like he really knows his stuff and has some good ideas.

Styxx

  • Candidate Type: Subject Matter Expert
  • Area of Space: Highsec
  • Affiliation: D.A.R.K. – Dark Shado
  • Area of Expertise: Everything
  • Candidate Statement
  • Notes: No campaign thread, no URL, no interview, and a campaign statement that didn’t give a lot of useful information.

Teddy Gbyc

  • Endorsed: No – Lack of Information
  • Area of Space: WH
  • Affiliation: Chain Smoking – Sinners Trajectory
  • Candidate Statement
  • Notes: No campaign thread, no URL, no interview, and a campaign statement that didn’t give a lot of useful information.

The Judge

  • Endorsed: No – Null Bloc
  • Area of Space: Nullsec
  • Affiliation: Goonswarm Federation – Karmafleet
  • Notes: I am biased against this guy, which makes it difficult to evaluate him as CSM member.  Fortunately, he’s a null bloc candidate, so I wasn’t going to recommend him anyway.

Vily

  • Endorsed: No – Bloc Candidate
  • Candidate Type: Subject Matter Expert
  • Area of Space: Nullsec
  • Affiliation: Test Alliance Please Ignore – Spartan Vanguard
  • Area of Expertise: Bloc FC
  • Values/Priorities: Conflict | Better Balance between Attacking and Defending Sov
  • Campaign Thread
  • Jin’taan Interview
  • Notes: Lots of talk, little detail.

Xenuria

  • Endorsed: No – Bloc Candidate
  • Area of Space: Nullsec
  • Affiliation: Goonswarm Federation – Karmafleet
  • Values/Priorities: CSM Transparency and Player Engagement with it
  • TIS Interview
  • Candidate Statement
  • Notes: Traded Endorsements with Manic Velocity. Doesn’t say much about himself in his campaign thread. Instead, he mostly lectures apathetic voters. Not a friend of the incursion community.  Didn’t Finish my research.

Zap Inspace

  • Endorsed: No – See Notes
  • Candidate Type:
  • Area of Space: Highsec
  • Affiliation: No Alliance – HC – Hanother One
  • Area of Expertise: Generalist
  • Values/Priorities: Solo PvP | Small Gang PvP | Subcap PvP | Preservation of Unique J-Space Mechanics | Making Nullsec Dangerous | Alternate Playstyles | Tweaking Local Mechanics
  • Candidate Statement
  • Notes: I think he has some good ideas, but he just doesn’t have the support.  He needs to build up his in-game reputation, do interviews, make a campaign video, or something.

Zipp Adoudel

  • Endorsed: No – Bloc Candidate
  • Candidate Type: Subject matter Expert | Community
  • Area of Space: Nullsec
  • Affiliation: The Initiative – Godless Horizon
  • Area of Expertise: All Levels of  PvP | Mining & Industry | WH’s | Exploration| Abyssals | Missioning | Alliance Leadership
  • Values/Priorities: Small Gang | Alliance Warfare | All Play styles | Balance | Promoting PvP | Rock-Paper-Scissors Ship Design
  • TIS Interview
  • Candidate Statement
  • Notes: I don’t agree with all of his ideas, but I think he has some good values and a good head on his shoulders.

Notes

Null Bloc Overrepresentation

Without question, there are some highly knowledgeable and deserving nullsec power bloc candidates running, but I probably won’t be recommending any.  They don’t need any more help getting elected, and you can rest assured that nullsec will still be overrepresented on CSM 14.  Instead, I recommend you vote for other areas of space and types of gameplay.  They may not have the most players, or be the best organized, but that doesn’t mean that they aren’t important to Eve’s ecosystem or the health of the playerbase.

Thus, if you want to see a more representative CSM, start by placing the candidates that represent gameplay and areas of space that you enjoy at the top of your ballot.  If you still have room on your ballot after that, show some love to another underrepresented region.

Differentiating between Candidates from Null Blocs

There are candidates from the null-blocs who aren’t getting put on null-bloc ballots.  Some are backup candidates in case the primary candidates weren’t approved by CCP, and some are not officially sanctioned by their bloc.  I’m discouraging voting for the lot of them because of the previously aforementioned problem.

Fact Checking

Also, I don’t have the time to evaluate the veracity of player statements or the degree of their expertise.  If a candidate says that they have experience in an area, I’m going to have to take their word for it.

Why I’m Not Strictly Opposed to Further Monetization

*For example, Warframe sometimes gives coupons for premium currency as a daily login reward.  It’s kind of like a popup, but it only occurs once at login, and the other rewards can range from mediocre to really good.  Thus, no one complains, and people actually get really excited about some of the rewards.  This is why I’m not completely opposed to such ideas, but instead want to make sure that if they are implemented, that they are done so correctly.  Preferably, they’ll have good elements that people like, but at the very minimum, they shouldn’t cause outrage.
